Get answers to common questions about farm work in Australia.
The 88-day visa requirement allows Working Holiday Makers (subclass 417 and 462) to extend their visa by completing 88 days of specified work in regional Australia. This work must be in eligible industries like agriculture, fishing, forestry, mining, or construction. Many of our farm jobs qualify for this program, helping you meet the requirements while gaining valuable work experience.
No prior experience is required for many entry-level farm positions. Most employers provide on-the-job training and are looking for people with a positive attitude, willingness to learn, and strong work ethic. However, having some experience with physical work, machinery, or animals can be an advantage. We list both entry-level and experienced positions to suit all skill levels.
Farm work pay varies depending on the type of work, location, and experience level. Entry-level positions typically start at minimum wage ($21.38 per hour as of 2024), while experienced roles can pay $25-35+ per hour. Some positions offer piece rates for fruit picking, which can result in higher earnings for fast workers. Many jobs also include accommodation and meals, which adds significant value to your total package.
Many farm employers provide accommodation as part of the job package, especially in remote locations. This can range from shared dormitory-style housing to private rooms or cottages. When accommodation is provided, a reasonable amount is usually deducted from your wages (typically $100-200 per week). Always confirm accommodation details before accepting a position, including what's included and any associated costs.
Seasonal work follows Australia's harvest calendar, which varies by region and crop type. Use our job search filters to find seasonal positions, check our state-by-state guides for harvest times, and consider following the harvest trail - moving between regions as different crops come into season. Popular seasons include citrus picking in winter, stone fruit in summer, and grape harvest in autumn. Planning ahead and being flexible with locations will give you the best opportunities.
