Primary objective
Lead and supervise development of policy and advice to Government, key client groups and the public on the sustainable
management of aquatic resources in the NT. Coordinate financial and administrative activities of multiple projects.
Context statement
This position is aimed at a person with extensive experience in fisheries or natural resource management. The role will lead
complex fisheries management projects and supervise staff. The role sits within the Wild Harvest Fisheries unit and works as
part of a multidisciplinary team comprising fisheries managers, research scientists, technical and data service officers within
the Fisheries Division.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead strategic planning to facilitate effective policy development and delivery of operational frameworks.
2. Develop and implement policy to ensure sustainable management and development of NT’s fish and aquatic resources.
3. Provide expert advice to the Director of Fisheries, the Minister and other government organisations on the sustainable
management of fish and aquatic resources.
4. Facilitate meetings and negotiate outcomes with key stakeholders, government organisations and Indigenous groups.
5. Ensure projects and operations are targeted towards achieving departmental, government, and as appropriate, key client
group’s objectives.
6. Supervise staff and support their development to improve the capacity and capability of the team.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Strong project management experience, including developing project plans, coordinating activities, monitoring and
evaluating progress, resolving issues, and delivering results within agreed timeframes.
2. Demonstrated critical thinking skills, with experience in evaluating data and drawing evidence-based conclusions to
develop fisheries or natural resource management policy, strategies or legislation.
3. Demonstrated ability to engage and collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders to effectively manage and implement
complex projects.
4. Highly developed written communication skills, with a proven ability to produce clear, well-structured documents tailored
to a variety of audiences, including technical reports, briefings, and external communications.
5. Demonstrated ability to work independently and lead a team to achieve goals.
Desirable
1. Tertiary qualification in fisheries or natural resource management.
2. Proven experience in the use of information technology systems and digital platforms relevant to the management of
natural resources.
