The Role
Horticultural Agronomist – Iraak
Gill Farms Mildura is a family owned & operated company located in the Iraak Nangiloc area, approximately 30kms south of Mildura. Our 1000 Ha orchards and vineyards comprise Citrus, Wine grapes, Almonds, and Avocados.
We have an opening for the right person to join our expanding horticulture company in the role of Horticultural Agronomist.
As a Horticultural agronomist, you will be responsible for assisting in and maintaining all fruit crops being grown across our orchards and vineyards, crop health, yields, and achievement of harvest expectations and productivity.
The role encompasses both an operational and technical focus including but not limited to:
- Advising Farm Management team on techniques for improving the production of crops, and alternative agricultural options
- Advising Farm Management team on issues such as crop disease, control of pests and weeds, soil improvement
- Studying the environmental factors affecting commercial crop production, and the growth and health of crops
- Studying the effects of cultivation techniques, soils, insects and plant diseases crop and crop production
- Developing procedures and techniques for solving agricultural problems and improving the efficiency of production
- Managing crop resources to maximise their long-term environmental benefits for the community
- Studying the propagation and culture of crops, methods for improving crop growth, and the effects of thinning on crop yields
- Preparing plans for reafforestation and devising efficient harvesting systems
- Investigating, planning and implementing management procedures to cope with the effects of fires, floods, droughts, soil erosion, insect pests and diseases
- Assist in the budgeting of annual fertigation, irrigation and spray programmes.
- Collecting and analysing data and samples of produce, soil and other factors affecting production.
- Assist in the collection, collation and interpretation of data from fruit crops and Vine grapes projects and activities, particularly those related to sustainable crop production.
- Assist management to ensure all orchard policies and procedures, OH&S, HACCF programmes and planning permits performed to industry “best practice”.
We are seeking a motivated team player. A degree in Horticulture Science, Applied Science from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent academic qualifications in crop or horticulture production and management is highly desired.
You will be an independent, self-driven individual, maintaining a current driver’s licence.
You must be a team player, with a very high work standard and a high level of attention to detail. You will have a sound knowledge of OH&S policies to maintain a safe workplace.
The role is a full-time salaried position Ranging from $75k to $90k.
