The Role

Position Information

The NSW Department of Education provides, funds and regulates education services for NSW students from early childhood to secondary school, delivering world-class education through its public schools and providing funding support to non-government schools. We employ, develop and support teachers, leaders and other staff to deliver the best outcomes for students and to advance the wellbeing of Aboriginal people.

About the Role

Student Support Officers work within the school community to enhance student wellbeing and learning outcomes in partnership with the wellbeing team and the school counselling service. Student Support Officers provide individual and targeted wellbeing support and whole of school wellbeing initiatives and programs that are evidence-based. They have a pivotal role in working collaboratively with external agencies and creating referral pathways for students and families to child and family support agencies.

Essential Requirements

  • A completed diploma or higher qualification in social work, youth work, welfare or related discipline must be attached along with your application
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the Department’s Aboriginal education policies
  • Valid and current Working With Children Check (WWCC).

Additional Information
The new Wentworth Point High School (WPHS) is located at Burroway Road Wentworth Point. The high rise six-level school sits in a high-density property area comprising only apartment residences. The school commenced operations in 2025 with year 7 including three Autism (AU) support classes and will have a staggered start to year groups year-on-year. From 2026 there will be five Autism (AU) support classes. The new secondary school is designed to serve the dramatically growing number of local families in the area and will cater for 1530 students with an average year group of 255 students. The school has close links with Wentworth Point Public School, as a partner school as well as sharing a geographical boundary. The school will also have strong links with Parramatta Council as there will be shared grounds and facilities, such as parking space and an oval which are to be completed in Phase 2 of the build. The school has diverse feeder public schools including Wentworth Point Public School, Newington Public School, Concord West Public School, Auburn North Public School and Victoria Avenue Public School.

The school has a highly diverse student population. Our current Year 7 cohort has 170 Mainstream and 18 Support Unit students, with students born in 20 different countries and speaking over 23 languages at home. Mongolian, Arabic, Mandarin and Korean are the most prominent. Approximately 25% of students are on Temporary Resident Visas, mostly from Mongolia and Saudi Arabia. The socio-economic status of families is broad. The school is committed to establishing high expectations for learning and behaviour, within a supportive framework that ensures students feel known, valued and cared for.
